(...) Every time a new recording by Evgeni Koroliov gets released I get excited; so sensitive and probing an artist is he that everything he touches seems to turn into sonic gold. This is especially true when handling some of the best of literature—and there isn’t much that’s better than Beethoven’s piano sonatas opp. 101 and 106. In his hands both works sound fresh and new, as if I were hearing the compositions for the very first time: at one moment the pieces sound like symphonies in his hands, so very rounded and orchestral is his sound; in the next his quiet pianissimos sweep it all away and make one listen to what seems like the most important secret of one’s life being delivered in a hushed whisper.
